Gym Class Heroes Baby!

There is no better way to finish off the blog posts with a classic bop. “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes ft. Adam Levine, and if that doesn’t ring a bell look it up, and if that still doesn’t work then I’m sorry for your loss.  This song is just fun. It’s great to dance to, it’s great to sing to. It’s simple. Many songs that I have written about have some sort of sentimental value or have some deep meaning. I did grow up listening to this song. Then my senior year me and my best friend would listen to it during our track workouts, so I guess it does have some sentimental value.  This song is a mixture of Pop and Rap. It’s very straightforward and the same idea is repeated over and over, kinda like disco. I love what they do at the beginning of the song. They purposely turn down the volume then once it goes into the actual song they turn it up, kinda like a stereo. The song definitely has an early 2000s feel to it, which I would describe as upbeat ...

Girlfriend in a Coma

I’d be more surprised if you’ve heard “Girlfriend In A Coma” by The Smiths, than if you haven’t. It’s a song by an English band The Smiths. The only reason I know this song is because my 8th grade science teacher would play it all the time then do the macarena in his tall swivel chair. He would sing along in a very monotone voice. I’ll be honest I don’t actually love the song, it's just a fun memory. I’m actually very confused with the story behind this song. Obviously something about his girlfriend in a coma, but he says “there were times when I could’ve murdered her,” and “there were times when I could’ve strangled her,” so I’m curious as to why she is actually in a coma. The song itself is pretty boring and monotone. It’s 2 minutes long and there’s no emotion the whole time. I think that's just the style of the band, but it might also be trying to add to the story as well. He seems to be indifferent that his girlfriend is in a coma. But even though it’s just a song, he kin...

I'm Still Yours

So, from what I’m seeing, we do not cover Journey in this class. I know, it’s heartbreaking, but that’s why I have to do one of their greatest hits for this week's blog. No, I’m not gonna do “Don’t Stop Believing,” not because I don’t like it (because I absolutely love it). I want to shed light on another one of my favorites, “Faithfully.” I just want to start by pointing out how sweet this song is, it seems like every song nowadays is about sex, cheating on someone, or being cheated on. But this song is about loving that one person wholly, he says “I’m forever yours, faithfully,” the story of this song just gives me chills. He also says “two strangers learn to fall in love again, I get the joy of rediscovering you,” the hopeless romantic inside of me is literally screaming, it just feels so pure and so sweet. I love Journey’s unique sound and stories. This song has very extravagant music. Lots of drums and a big crescendo into each chorus. The lead singer also has an amazing voi...

Do you Remember the 21st Night of September?

What is so special about the 21st of September? Apparently nothing, it actually just sounded better than the 4th of September. If you have no idea what I’m referring to, first of all, I’m sorry. And second I’m talking about the classic disco song, “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire. I swear I hear this song all the time, and it’s so good. It’s very upbeat and fun to dance to. I do have to admit that my first memory with this song was singing it in choir when I was a freshman in high school. Usually I end up being scarred by the pop song that I have sung in choirs, but by some miracle I ended up loving this song. This song is unique from other disco songs. We learned that disco is more about the beat and has minimal lyrics, which is true about this song, for the most part. But there are more lyrics in this disco song than others. I believe they work hand in hand with the music to make it great for not only dancing but singing your heart out. Also, I seriously love that this is a...

Imagine a World...

“Imagine” by John Lennon. Imagine a world where people live “for today.” No possessions, no hunger, greed, and even no heaven or hell. John asks those listening to think about what the world would be like if this was the case.        The story John tells and the musicality of this song come together to create a masterpiece. The first time I really listened to this song was actually in my 7th grade choir concert, the advanced choir sang it and despite it being a junior high school choir concert, I loved it. Again what really stuck out to me was the lyrics. They bring feelings of longing and hope. For every person the kind of world they imagine is going to be different. For example the phrase “Imagine no possessions,” it is going to be very different for someone living in poverty versus a millionaire. Both could feel a sense of relief, or the millionaire could feel a sense of loss whereas someone living in poverty could feel hope. This ...

"I got a friend in Jesus" :)

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, iconic. This era of music is simply iconic. The song I chose is featured in the soundtrack for one of the best movies ever, Remember the Titans. “Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum. For those of you that have never seen Remember the Titans (please watch it by the way, it’s so good), it’s about a high school football team in the 1970’s as they are working towards desegregating schools. It shows how they became family despite their differences. That’s a tragic understatement of what the movie is really about but it will have to do for now. Basically this song plays as they are arriving at their football camp, which leads to my favorite part of the movie. What I love about music and this song is the feelings and memories it brings. Not only is this song in my favorite movie, but it brings back so many good memories from my senior year of track. The soundtrack from this movie became my pre-race playlist and it helped calm my nerves. I ...

Just as long as you Stand By Me

The music from the 60s and 70s is truly iconic. It was genuinely hard for me to pick which song I wanted to do. “Stand by me” by Ben E. King is one of those iconic songs that I have just always known, I have no idea where I first heard it. I love this song for multiple reasons, not only does it have a great and relaxed beat, but the story it tells is so sweet, it’s a very feel good song. I actually think the original meaning behind the song is him singing to his “darling” and saying everything will be okay if she is there for him. But what I love is that whether we are in a relationship, have a love interest, or not, we can still relate to this song in some way. I personally think of my older sister. She is always there for me and I’m always there for her. Whenever he says “just as long as you stand by me” I think of times that I felt alone or overwhelmed, and I remember how my sister was always just a call away. Ben is almost asking for someone to stand by him throughout the son...
