Who's the Top Dog?
“Hound Dog” is performed by both Elvis and “Big Mama” Thornton. When I learned this I knew I had to find out who sang it better. Honestly, both versions are really fun and the artists do a great job of bringing their own unique style. Thornton’s take is slower, scrappy, and is very fitting for the blues genre. Whereas Elvis’ is faster and very crisp. As I said, both are great, but I have to give it to Thornton. This song is basically a diss track and a rejection song in one. And Thornton’s powerful voice does a better job portraying that. I also love the blues vibe, there is so much texture and variety in Thornton’s version that makes it very interesting to listen to. I think it's great that even though they performed the same song, they are very different. It’s great that artists can build off of each other to keep creating more. It’s like what scientists do with research, one scientist shares their research and another one may take the same experiment but change a few factors to come to a new conclusion. Personally I love it because it provides me with music and entertainment.
I agree 100% agree with you that both versions have their own style. I think that I Thorton's version just because of how raspy her voice was. I also believe that Thornton's voice portrays the blues tone better. Her voice is beautiful and she knows how to use it for her own good. I like that you added how artists can build off of each other. I think that you did an amazing job at this!
